Comedy

Overview

What is often referred to as ‘the new rock and roll comedy’ has certainly taken on a new dimension over the last few years. Gone are the days of comedians doing their thing to a couple of hundred people in intimate rooms. Many are now enjoying huge TV success and rolling out tours taking in many of the country’s largest venues. Shows have become events/experiences and additional production elements are essential in order to make the experience complete.

Capital supplied one of the fist UK arena tours rolled out in this format with Eddie Izzard early in the new millennium. The system design was a new concept using a large-scale distributed system to ensure that no gag went unheard. The method was simply to ensure that everyone in the room had a loudspeaker at close proximity to ensure room ambience did not become a factor and interfere with punch lines. This early design has now become the industry standard in handling comedy in arenas.

The approach to designing for comedy is far removed from that for music or anything else. Loudspeaker choice and location are critical, as are microphone choice and the abilities of the sound engineer. Over recent years, Capital’s comedy clients have included Open Mike, Off the Kerb and Avalon, with systems supplied for Eddie Izzard, Lee Evans, Al Murray, Frank Skinner, Russell Howard and Michael Mcintyre. We were proud to achieve excellent vocal clarity and full venues of satisfied customers.
